Fifteen-year-old Skye, the middle child, finds herself wishing for a new life-one that doesn't include daily harassment from the in-crowd at Highland Creek High School. Skye barely survived freshman year. She only did because her best friend, Goose, a semi-popular fellow band geek, was by her side. But when their sophomore year starts, Goose ditches Skye for a new crowd.
Cast into a lone existence at Highland Creek, Skye wishes for a touch of extraordinary that everyone, except her, seems to have. Her older sister, Sara Elizabeth, has it. Goose is getting close to it, and even her little sister is wildly popular in junior high. Skye would do almost anything to cast off her ordinary life...but at what price?
When her older sister goes missing without a trace, Skye gets her wish...but it's not exactly what she had in mind. And when she questions Bryan, the senior class renegade and also the last person to be seen with her sister, she finds something she never quite expected.

"Girl in the Middle" tracks fifteen-year-old Skye through a year of adolescent angst and coming to terms with herself. The middle of three daughters, she feels sandwiched between her beautiful and popular sisters, and her fragile self-esteem cracks when her best childhood buddy returns from summer vacation so taken with himself and his California tan that he no longer has time for her. Navigating peer bullying and family troubles, Skye nevertheless holds to her commitments and proves herself loyal, especially when she befriends an attractive boy from the wrong side of town. In her debut novel, Christine Bailey is pitch perfect in portraying the confusion, heartache, and exuberant joy we all remember from our adolescent days. Girl in the Middle eBook Christine Bailey Reviews
Skye Walker is getting ready to start her sophomore year of high school. She is the unremarkable middle child stuck between two blonde, beautiful popular sisters. Her only friend, Goose has abandoned her for California for the summer and she has had to go it alone. When Goose finally gets back from California he has changed, for the worse. He looks different and acts different and now sits with the popular crowd leaving Skye to fend for herself. Skye finally befriends Lauren, who is unlikable and mean, so she won't have to be alone. This school year is the worst one yet!
When Skye's older sister Sarah Elizabeth disappears without a trace, Skye finds out just how strong and important she really is. Trying to find Sarah Elizabeth, Skye meets Bryan, the bad boy of high school who may or may not be the last person to have seen Skye.
First I want to thank the author Christine Bailey for sending me a copy of her book. It is an incredible and remarkable read. Teenage angst mixed with a little mystery. Skye Walker (love the name) is the quintessential middle child. She always gets overshadowed by her older and younger sister. Sarah Elizabeth has problems of her own, she has been good about keeping everything a secret and maybe she doesn't want to be found. Everyone thinks that Bryan is nothing but trouble but Skye sees through him.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. You will not be disappointed with this book!
A terrific debut by an author clued in to the minds and hearts of young people. I won't go through the plot points as those are well detailed above. Instead, I want to address the social/emotional elements of this interesting "journey" story.
Although Girl in the Middle is a girl's story first, it is also, to some degree, a boy's story but in the universal sense. It is to Bailey's credit that she did not burden her male characters with standard behaviors. There were as many surprises as there were predictable events among all the characters. She characterizes the boys and young men in a variety of emotions and actions, though her fondness for her characters could have been a little more realistic to illustrate the realities of surviving modern high school. There is an important shadow plot in the snapshot of this family. Skye's best friend, a boy, begins to go the way boys go, leaving Skye alone in an uncomfortable society with her uncomfortable self. This theme of surviving a forced independence is experienced by all the major characters.
The father of the family, Mr. Walker, is passive and almost invisible in his otherwise all-female household. Skye, (the titular middle child) excuses this as a result of his work schedule. This sort of passivity elaborates the stereotypical role of a family provider, who is typically male. His absences define him. His characterization might have benefited from a greater range of emotions and reactions, particularly when his older daughter goes missing. The boyfriends appear naively (innocently) unaware of the effect their attention has on the girls who like or **love** them.
"Girl in the Middle" is an afternoon's read. The voices of its characters are clear and distinct, and the narrative, driven heavily by dialogue, progresses without distracting blocks of back-story or flashback. The plot moves quickly to a neutral resolve. In the end, Skye knows herself in new ways, and her observational/writer's eye has matured. There is no quick conversion to civility among the sisters whose squabbles are intrinsic to their relationship, but a comfortable sense of appreciation for each other and for their parents infuses the final pages. As a result of a major family upheaval, each member examines his and her roles in the dynamic. Still, you get the sense at the end that this family is a group of independent members who have not yet managed to function as a unit. Again, that theme of a forced survival lies just beneath the surface of each character, which is good; it intrigues to see how each will get through. The unresolved ending perhaps will provide the plot for a future sequel.
Bravo for Ms. Bailey's initial publication. In a previous decade, I could say that I could envision a "shelf" of Christine Bailey books in every mall bookstore. Alas, the virtual bookshelf will have to suffice.
This was a great book and I'm hoping there will be a second part down the road. I really enjoyed it.
This one is a real page turner! Skye's story is exciting and interesting. It brings to life how confusing and tumultuous being a teenager can be.
This book did not disappoint! I started reading it and only meant to read a few chapters but ended up finishing it that day. I was sad at the end, I wanted the story to keep going. I think everyone can relate to this book. Very good read, hope for more soon!
I need to clarify two things that may perhaps bias my review. First, I am not a member of the target audience (I'm a 34-year-old man), and second, Chris, as I know her, is an old friend of mine.
With those qualifications out of the way, and at the risk of losing my man card, I will admit I enjoyed Girl in the Middle.
It is quickly paced and well-written, and I think it captures well what I remember of the angst and turbulence of the high school years the desire to be popular while being true to yourself, sibling rivalries, conflict with friends, and trying to make sense of everything around you. Family problems add to the drama and heighten the relevancy of this with some of the issues society and middle- and high-schoolers face today.
Perhaps the best endorsement I can give the book is this as I read I forgot that it was a book written by my friend; I found myself reading about Skye instead of reading a book written by my friend.
